What is Luckey LLC?
Luckey, LLC is a design/build firm that specializes in climbing sculptures for children's museums and other institutional clients. For over twenty-five years we have been providing bespoke climbers for clients all over the world. The company was founded by Thomas Luckey in 1985, after he received a commission from the Boston Children's Museum.
What is a climber?
A Climber is a three dimensional exploratory experience that challenges children's gross motor skills and provides a unique platform for free play and exploration. Climbers are part sculpture, part jungle gym, and in some sense, they are also fountains of kids. They are very safe, and present the user with firm ground and security, without limiting exploratory potential. The spaces within the climber are scaled for crawling movement; the idea being that if you cannot stand up, you cannot fall down. Climbers are composed of bent plywood platforms that are suspended by steel pipes and cables. This simple system has proven to be remarkably adaptable while maintaining a unique visual elegance.
Are climbers Safe?
Safety is a huge deal to us; we have a spotless safety record in over 25 years of business. The consequences of failure cannot be overstated, and would likely spell the end of Luckey, LLC. We go to great lengths to ensure that each installation is done in accordance with safe work practices. Once completed, the climbers all adhere to some basic principals that have served us well the years; that there is never a fall greater than 18 inches, and that there is never a cascade of falls such as one might find on a staircase. We also design the climbers so that one's opportunities to stand up are limited; the idea being that if you cannot stand up, you cannot fall down.
Where can I visit a climber?
There are climbers at over twenty-five cities throughout the country with more opening every year. Please review the list of cities on our homepage for the project closest to you.
How is a climber made?
At Luckey, LLC, we have been building custom climbers for over 25 years. During this time, we have accrued a host of tools and resources to simplify every stage of the process, from design through project completion. Using digital design software in concert with automated milling and fabrication, we have married the whimsical freedom of imagination with the mechanical precision of the computer age. The result is dependably different.
We maintain 5000 square foot design and fabrication facility in New Haven, CT. This facility houses both our digital design suite and complementary steel fabrication studio. A 5-axis CNC mill, which cuts complex curves into wood panels with milimetric accuracy, also interfaces with our computers. Together, these tools give us the capacity to custom-build each individual component of the climber. With our Vacu-press vacuum forming system and other specialized painting and finishing equipment, we are able to add another level of polished uniqueness to these raw components. Finally, we make any necessary refinements with our considerable inventory of hand tools, and load shipping containers with our 7 ton fork lift. Once shipped to the site the fabricated parts will be met by Luckey LLC's installation crew. Our team of skilled technicians then erect the steel structure, hang climbing platforms, and net the climber before it is ready for use.
How long does it take to make a climber?
Typically or projects take from 6 to 24 months complete. This includes design, fabrication, shipping and installation. Our projects fall generally in two categories: the smaller ones, which tend to have a short cycle, and larger ones that are more complicated, require greater funding and coordination, and consequently require more time from start to finish. We take the schedule very seriously and are always transparent about projected lead times and coordination.

Do climbers come with a warranty?
