Winston-Salem, North Carolina “Beanstalk Climber”

Luckey was asked to design this climber to resemble a beanstalk. But he’d prefer people didn’t call it that — he hesitates to liken any of his creations to a single object, because that’s not how his creative process works. Kids, he says, don’t really care what his climbers look like — and besides, they have much more fertile imaginations. Although the climb is not extremely complex — it offers the usual number of options for children, and you can only go up, returning to the bottom via stairs or the elevator — it does get more complicated toward the top. Also, the construction process was challenging because it was built entirely around the central column. “Everything,” Luckey says, “cantilevers off that one pipe.”
